Piolo Pascual
The heartthrob Piolo Pascual elicits screams and sighs from fans—and as one admirer puts it, you’ll surely give in. But the 30-year-old actor is in reality a reluctant matinee idol, a late blooming heartthrob who doesn’t quite get what all the fuss is about.
“Me, a heartthrob?” he says. “I don’t know where that came from. I don’t know what it really means. I was also once called hunk and dreamboy. It was an honor to be called one. But it’s nothing really serious that I would want to be included in my name.”
Wenn Deramas, who directs Piolo in the movie Walang Kapalit, recalls: “We were already working together before as theater actors in Teatro Tomasino. But I was not paying attention to him because he was too thin. I honestly didn’t think he would be this big.” Then, after losing a role in a TV series to another actor, Piolo went to the U.S. “When he came back, he has changed to a handsome man. So, I was in wow.”
The wow factor led to several important roles in major movies and brought Piolo to an impressive grand-slam in 2003, when he grabbed eight best-supporting-actor trophies for his performance in Dekada ‘70
Director Wenn does not see Piolo as a mere heartthrob, “For me, being a heartthrob is plainly having that pretty face. Piolo is definitely more than that. He is the Boyet de Leon of this generation. You can pair him with anyone. When he’s the character, the film sells and TV shows gain high rates.”
